“We’re paying our own way. We want to go to Congress, change things and give back to America that’s helped make our company and our family successful,” said 8th Congressional Candidate David Trone.
It was a busy day at Trone’s campaign headquarters in Rockville. Staff and volunteers have been preparing for months for April 26 – Maryland’s primary election.
“This particular race, I’m the outsider. I’m the guy that’s the change agent looking to focus on doing things different, not like insidem the Beltway crew,” Trone said.
Trone has made millions as the founder of Total Wine and More.
“[The] typical congressman spends 60 percent of his or her time raising money. It’s unbelievable! They’re listening to the lobbyists, listening to the PACs,” Trone said.
So far, Trone’s campaign said he’s spent nearly $12 million of his own money on his campaign – reportedly the most ever from a self-financing House candidate.
Some have compared Trone’s campaign funding to that of Republican Presidential Candidate Donald Trump.
“There’s definitely a big difference between what Trump is doing,” Trone said. “Trump is everything that is bad about America. He’s about a lack of civility, a lack of inclusivity. He talks about paying his own way, but he’s not really paying it. He’s taking tens of millions of dollars from people all over America.”
With the Maryland primary election just hours away, Trone is spending every last second campaigning.
“[We have] a lot of great momentum right now,” Trone said. “We need a great turnout. I think we have a sunny day tomorrow, and the key for everybody is to get out and vote.”
