If you’re in downtown Rockville visiting town square, you may notice two big flops in the area and officials say if you see them…sign them.
Montgomery County has two people heading to Rio to compete in the Olympics. Katie Ledecky in women’s swimming and Jack Conger in men’s swimming.
The flip flops in downtown Rockville are a way for residents to sign and support our athletes.
“This was a community effort and we decided to do it in Rockville Town Square because of it’s central location in Montgomery County so we just wanted to show our support and let the community show their support to them,” said Samantha Schmieder, Spokesperson, Rockville Time Square.
With the help of the Montgomery County department of recreation and local swim clubs in the area, these flip-flops were made to support the Olympians, which for two young swimmers, means a lot.
“When I watch them they help me with my skills,” Lauren Gotting.
These two sisters really especially feel inspired after meeting Michael Phelps’ mother at their junior Olympics.
“We got a picture with her and she signed autographs with her and his sister swam in an event,” said Kaitlin Gotting.
Residents say they couldn’t be more proud.
“This is awesome. We’re so proud of our Olympians. You know swimming is one of the first ones that come up after the opening ceremony next week and we’re super proud of them and wanted to show how proud we were,” said Schmieder,
The signing will last until August 13.
