The Washington County Board of Elections has been looking for a new home for the past few years, and the election director told us they finally have a promising location.
After endless searching, the Washington County Election Board officials said they may be able to claim the old Macy’s building at the Valley Mall in Hagerstown as their own.
“This is just very exciting for us, and, if you say Valley Mall, pretty much everyone knows how to get there,” Kaye Robucci, the Washington County Election Director, said.
Washington County Commissioners sent out a letter of intent to the local mall, requesting to pursue a contract for a long-term lease. The county has designated money in their budget to cover the rent for about 20,000 square feet of space for them.
“If you have [a] warehouse where early voting and where your training is, the equipment is right there. You can easily move it to the early voting room or over to training, and you won’t have to transport it someplace,” Robucci said.
The Election Board is split between two locations. The board offices are located on 35 West Washington Street, while their warehouse and training facilities are kept on Tandy Drive, so if they move to the Valley Mall, they would be able have one location.
“We always desired to have everything in one place, [including] the office, the warehouse, our early voting center and the training facility. This is something we have dreamed about for many years,” Robucci said.
No lease has been signed but the Valley Mall said they would be very happy to see it come to into fruition.
