Life just got a little easier and safer for recreational bicyclists in the Silver Spring area.
The Maryland National Capital Park and Planning Commission celebrated the opening of its Spring Street separated bike lane in downtown Silver Spring this weekend.
The new bikeway is separated from vehicles by a painted buffer and flexible posts to keep cars from intruding into the bike lanes.
In addition to the barriers, parked cars provide a natural buffer.
Early reviews of the new lanes have been favorable.
“It’s outstanding!” said recreational bicyclist David Kahn. “It is a safe passage through a pretty heavily trafficked area, and we need that.”
The bikeway runs along Spring Street from Second Avenue in the west to Ellsworth Drive and will continue along Cedar Street to Wayne Avenue.
