Active shooter training held at Smithsburg High School

News

While students were off for the weekend, an active shooter training took place at Smithsburg High School.

The one day course was centered around how EMS, fire and law enforcement could work together to change tactics and provide quicker response times.

Students learned tactical movements and room clearing as well as tactical triage. With the world changing and the recent shootings, officials said they’ve realized their response wasn’t as effective as it needed to be.

“We need to get the providers, the EMT, the paramedics to the point of injury. We need to prevent the dying,” said Matt Watson, EPIC program director at Shenandoah University.

Officials said their next step is to train teachers how to recognize serious bleeding and to stop it because at the time, those people are the true first responders who are present at the schools.
