Meteorologist Derek Bowen joined the WDVM weather team in November 2016.
Raised in Northeastern Arkansas, he got to observe many different kinds of weather. From extreme severe weather events to the first modern documented blizzard in Arkansas, he got to see a little taste of each.
His love of weather began with watching local news with his parents. He won the fridge art contest at his local station, KAIT – Jonesboro, AR, twice. The fridge art contest is very similar to the kidscast forecast done at WDVM before the pandemic. Derek would then later intern at KAIT before entering college at Mississippi State.
At Mississippi State, Derek earned a bachelor of science degree in Geosciences with concentrations in professional and broadcast meteorology. There at Mississippi State, he studied the winter storm of January of 2016. Derek accurately predicted the snowfall amounts in the State of Maryland and the District of Columbia. After graduation, he moved up to Maryland and landed a job at WDVM.
When not forecasting the weather, Derek loves helping out the community through St. John’s Episcopal Church in Hagerstown. He has a certificate in the Education for Ministry from the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee. He loves to engage in theological discussion and help others who have struggled with religion in the past with some closure. He loves discovering the mysteries of weather and the world around him, along with the mysteries of faith and spirituality.
