LocalDVM - Good morning everyone! I hope you are having a good Sunday. We have a chance of showers and thunderstorms as we go through the day today. Many of us are under a marginal risk of severe weather.
The Storm Prediction Center adjusted the risk this morning. The new line nearly includes the entire region with the slight chance just to our south. There are several factors, however, in playing out this severe weather day.
For first off we are seeing slightly chilly and breezy conditions in some parts of the region this morning. The showers and storms back off to the west appear to be losing strength quite rapidly as it has gone through yet another night. The question remains, will they strengthen during the day and how will the mountains affect their development stage?
We are seeing clear skies this morning. Now I still think clouds will move out ahead of the system putting a cap on our temperatures today. However, if it lingers around too long, we could see a pop-up shower or storm out ahead of the main line.
Timing is also a key factor. A few showers may pop-out in front of the may line. If this occurs, one of two things will happen. They could turn into supercell thunderstorms which may pack an early punch as the bulk of the system comes in. The other factor is that the system may weaken as temperatures today will not rise too far into the 60’s. Dewpoint temperatures are not as juiced as they are in traditional severe thunderstorms.
So with that in mind, heavy rains will be the call of the day. We may hear thunder and see lightning. Remember if you hear thunder indoors because you are close enough to be struck by lightning.
Another thing to keep in mind is the possibility of strong winds, which could cause wind damage in a few severe thunderstorms.
