Shannon Ryan joined the WDVM team as a reporter / multi-media journalist in March 2017. In December 2016 Shannon graduated from Penn State University early, with dual degrees in journalism and political science.
Shannon is excited to return to Northern Virginia as a reporter in WDVM’s Chantilly Bureau, having previously lived in Arlington, while interning for CBS News’ Washington D.C. Bureau.
Shannon has worked with the Associated Press as a writer, photographer and video-journalist. In September 2016 Shannon traveled to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to cover the Paralympics in conjunction with the AP and the John Curley Center for Sports Journalism at Penn State. Additionally, Shannon helped cover the 2016 U.S. Paralympic Team Trials in Charlotte, NC. Her work has been published in outlets such as The New York Times, ESPN, ABC News, The Washington Post, USA Today, Daily Mail U.K. and Yahoo News.
Shannon interned with FOX 29 Philadelphia in 2016, where she was able to assist with coverage of the Democratic National Convention. Shannon worked as a sideline reporter for the Big Ten Network during her time at Penn State. As a part of Penn State’s International reporting program Shannon traveled to Greece to report on the refugee crisis in 2015. Through Penn State, Shannon partnered with the Catholic News Service to cover the September 2015 Papal visit as a reporter in Philadelphia and D.C. Shannon worked as a reporter, anchor and producer for the Centre County Report on WPSU-TV from 2015-2016. Shannon was an ESPNU Campus Connection Correspondent throughout her time at Penn State. Shannon also worked for Penn State Athletics, in production and as a reporter. Shannon’s first internship was with WNYT NewsChannel 13 in Albany, NY, through the New York State Broadcaster’s Association. Shannon freelanced for multiple outlets in college, including CBS This Morning.
Shannon is a Saratoga County, NY native. In her free time Shannon enjoys exploring, outdoor adventures, yoga, hiking, boating, volunteering and physical fitness.
