Mercersburg Rotary wraps thousands of Christmas presents for families in need

Money to buy the presents was donated by Mercersburg residents

MERCERSBURG, Pa. - For the last 40 years, the Mercersburg community has held a gift wrapping event for families in need. For nearly 20 of those years, Mercersburg Academy students have been the main wrappers!

David Bell, of Mercersburg Rotary, played a big role in the event.

“We are wrapping presents for our Santa’s Toy Box program. The Mercersburg Rotary collects money from the community. The Rotary members and some other helpers shop, and we have purchased gifts for 275 children from 125 families this year,” he said.

Just like previous years, the number of presents being wrapped is just around 2,000.

“This is my first time,” said James Thompson, senior, Mercersburg Academy. “I didn’t come last year, but I wish I did now. It’s just great to wrap presents for kids that wouldn’t have got presents otherwise. It’s just a rewarding experience.”

“I actually just finished wrapping some clothes, so that was a little bit of a challenge. But [there were] lots of Hot Wheels, tractors and Legos," said Clara Getty, freshman, Mercersburg Academy.

“It’s just a really nice experience. You’re with a group of people in your grade, and you just get to come and help the community," said another student, Sally Ballentine.

There will be eight different groups delivering the presents. Santa Claus will actually take the toys to the houses of the children as well.
