CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - It's been months since many students in Florida and Houston were affected by this year's traumatic hurricane season, and some are still without much needed supplies.
Monday, the Chambersburg Area School District is stepping in to lend a helping hand.
In just two months, they were able to raise more than $14,000 through coin wars and support from community donations at sporting events.
Half of the funds were presented to Houston's independent school district, and the other half was divided among three Florida school districts.
A Hurricane relief committee presented the checks to representatives from the affected states via Skype.
"I think it's important that we help out others, especially since they experienced such loss. To be able to help those schools re-group and recover from those storms [is our goal]," said Laurie Porter, who launched the committee.
The funds are expected to be sent out later on this week.
