CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Borough of Chambersburg is in the process of putting together a time capsule that will be opened in the year 2118.
A couple of officials in Franklin County came to Borough Hall Monday to look at the items that are going to be placed in the time capsule.
“We decided that it's a great time. We're building a new building. We have an opportunity to take a snapshot of what Chambersburg looks like today,” said Alice Eliah, VP of Borough Council.
In the fall of 2017, the Borough sent out letters to various groups and businesses in the community for submissions. They were successful, as more than 50 groups donated to the cause.
“So, we've got houses of worship that are in town. We have organizations like Women in Need and the YMCA. We've got businesses that do manufacturing,” said Eliah.
The Borough has plans to put all the items in a time capsule in the wall of the first-floor lobby outside the new council chambers, which is currently under construction.
“Following the display here, we will pack it up into to sealed containers and in conjunction with the dry wall work that's starting this week. We will place it in a utility edition, within the next two weeks to a month,” said Lance Anderson, Project Manager for the utility addition project.
“It's always nice to have a snapshot of what your community looks like at any given time, and I think this time is an important one in Chambersburg, and we've got a lot of great things going on, one of which is this construction project,” said Eliah.
And once the items are placed in the time capsule, there will be a sign letting the public know when it'll be ok for them to open the time capsule.
