Homes to Replace Long Time Country Club

- FREDERICK, Md. - For generations, golfers in Frederick have enjoyed the greens at the VFW country club, but in about a year, that will change.

"The golf course is going to be developed. The swimming pool will be a comercial pad and we will have a commercial pad beside of us," said Hugh Warner, commander of VFW post 3285.

The property is being developed by the Buchanan Partners of Gaithersburg, Md. According to their website, the golf course will become a residential neighborhood called West Park Village and will include around 285 homes.

The new project will begin on the 57-acre property in mid 2015 but until then, long time members of the golf course are doing everything they can to keep what they consider a second home afloat.

"We want to keep it open and try to keep the place going as much as possible," said Dave Kennedy, a member with the country club since 1974.

Kennedy and several others who have been members of the country club for more than two decades volunteer at the country club with the hopes of maintaining the facility during the little time they have left.

"[It] almost brings tears to my eyes...this has been a big part of my life for a long time. I grew up here," said Kennedy.

In addition to community housing, Buchanan Partners plan to dedicate around 7 acres of park ground to the city and assets that will reduce traffic including new turn lanes, bike lanes and sidewalks.

Despite the new project, VFW is still holding their head high. They plan to continue their efforts to support veterans.
