One Person Dies in Four Vehicle Collision

FREDERICK COUNTY, Md. - A four vehicle collision claimed the life of one person Wednesday morning along Taneytown Pike (Rt. 140).

The crash happened at 10:24 a.m. along the eastbound side of Rt. 140, west of Four Points Bridge Road in Frederick County.

Maryland State Police said a preliminary investigation revealed a 2003 Honda Accord, driven by Kyle Etzler, 25, of Emmitsburg, Md., was traveling east on Rt. 140, when traffic slowed due to a vehicle making a right turn into a private driveway off of Rt. 140. Police said
Etzler was not able to slow down in time, and struck the rear of a 2003 Toyota Camry, driven by Alexandra Mort, 24, of Fairfield, Pennsylvania.

The crash caused
Etzler's Honda to go over into the westbound lane of Rt. 140, where it was stuck head-on by a 2005 Peterbilt tanker truck, driven by Jesse Sager, 29, of Annville, Pennsylvania. This crash caused Etzler's Honda to involuntarily re-enter the eastbound lane of Rt. 140 causing it to strike a third vehicle, a 2009 Chevrolet 2500 Van, driven by Paul Auman, 46, of Chambersburg, Pennsylvania.

Etzler was pronounced dead on scene by paramedics. State police said there were no other people inside the Honda at the time of the collision. None of the other drivers or passengers involved in the crash were injured.

Members of the Maryland State Police Reconstruction Team and Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division responded to assist with the investigation. The preliminary investigation revealed that alcohol was not a factor.

Rt. 140 at the crash site was shut down for about five hours Wednesday. No charges are being filed at this time, police say.
