Doctor Charged with Assaulting Patient, Could be Linked to 1987 Conviction

LaVale, Md. - William Thomas Dando, was hired as a doctor at MedExpress in 2013. Officials from the company said he passed several background checks before he was hired. People in the area say they are stunned by allegations filed against him, in which a patient says he sexually assaulted her at the medical clinic.

"I was in shock," said Barbara Brandt, a former patient. "I've gone over there and seen this doctor a couple times and I'm thinking that could've happened to me over there.'"

Officials with MedExpress said they've taken action to protect their patients.

"As soon as we learned about the patient complaint, William Dando was immediately removed from providing patient care within our centers," said Kelly Sorice, Vice President of Communications. "We are and will continue to fully cooperate with all the appropriate parties in the matter."

WHAG had several viewers contacting us saying Dando was also charged in a case while working in Florida. According to a 1987 article in the Orlando Sentinel, William Thomas Dando pleaded guilty to breaking into a home of a woman and raping her at gunpoint. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison by the Orange County Circuit Court.

According to MedExpress, Dando did go though a background check making sure he was licensed with the state medical board, and a criminal background check. MedExpress conducted its own internal review to see how his criminal past wasn't discovered until now.

"We are extremely concerned that this process did not reveal William Dandos' past conviction from 1987," Sorice added. "As a result, we are in the process of scrutinizing every single step of our background screening procedures to see where improvements may need to be made."

Dando is currently out on bail pending his next court appearance.
