School receives new, $100,000 fitness center

Maryland Governor Larry Hogan and Jake Steinfeld cut the ribbon Tuesday

KENSINGTON, Md. - Students at Newport Mill Middle School in Kensington have a new, $100,000 fitness facility, Maryland Governor Larry Hogan made a visit to the school Tuesday.

Actor and fitness trainer Jake Steinfeld works with governors across the country to invest in new fitness centers in schools. 

In Maryland, 170 schools applied to receive one of these new centers, and three were chosen, including Newport Mill Middle School in Montgomery County. 

"When you're exercising, and you feel great, you're less likely to take a drug. When you're exercising, and you feel great, you're less likely to join a gang," said Steinfeld.

The other two schools that received new fitness centers include Buck Lodge Middle School in Prince George's County and Vanguard Collegiate Middle School in Baltimore.
