Officials urge pedestrians to follow detour signs on MD-355

A section of sidewalk is closed on the side of the Metro

BETHESDA, Md. - Transportation officials in Montgomery County are urging pedestrians to follow detour signs by the Medical Center Metro Station, after some have made a habit of walking in the street.

A section of sidewalk is closed along MD-355, on the side of the Metro.

This is to allow for the construction of an underground tunnel connecting that east side to the west side of the road by the naval base.

MCDOT added additional signage this week to address the safety hazard, since MD-355 is a major thoroughfare for the greater Washington, D.C. region.

"People are used to walking in a certain direction or a certain area, and a lot of those accesses have been cut off,” said Frank Kingsley, Project Manager, Montgomery County's Division of Transportation Engineering. “We have provided them a new way to get around, and we just ask people to pay attention and look at the signs."

Officials said for the most part, construction-required lane closures are complete.

The entire project is expected to be finished by the end of 2021.
