FREDERICK, Md. - After a truck crashed into the Maryland Route 355 bridge over the Monocacy River on Wednesday, officials said that route will closed for the next few months.
The truck damaged the cross and vertical members on the bridge. The damage is something engineers said they have not seen in years, and it will be closed up to 60 days.
“We recognize that is an inconvenience not only to commuters that use Route 355 but also with the holiday season approaching and shoppers around the Francis Scott Key Mall area,” said John Concannon, District Engineer, Maryland Department of Transportation SHA.
MDOT officials said that the bridge was originally built during the 1930s.
The Maryland Route 355 bridge over the Monocacy River has been closed following a truck accident.
Officials with the Frederick County Sheriff's Office said the crash happened a little after 12 p.m. on Wednesday.
A tow truck was pulling a trash truck when it hit the overhead beams on the bridge, causing severe damage.
One concern that officials have is the damage to the support beams of the bridge, so they said that the bridge will be "closed for some time."
There will be detour signs placed to direct commuters.
