Fitzgerald Auto Mall show parents proper car seat installation

Eighty percent of car seats are not properly installed

ROCKVILLE, Md -  A local automotive company is working to assure children are safe because they say statistics show 80% of car seats in the U.S. is not properly installed.

There are a lot of parents who don’t realize their child is at risk when driving, due to improper use of car seats. Since 1999 the Fitzgerald automotive Technicians properly installed over 47,000 car seats and the idea is to get the child car seat misuse rate down.

"The number one killer of children under the age of 13 is motor vehicle accidents and currently right now depending on where you look between 75 and 80 percent of car seats out there have some form of misuse” says Child Passenger Seat Director, Larry Branche.

Auto technicians say some of the biggest misuses with car seats are improper installments and car seats facing the wrong direction and this will not secure the child in the event of a crash.

"For 2 years and 30 pounds, which is a recommendation by the American Academy of Pediatrics, should be rear facing and a rear facing seat whether it be an infant seat or a rear  facing convertible, the straps stay at or below the shoulder levels” says Montgomery County Master Firefighter, Dale Crown.

And technicians are hoping families spread the word to make driving safer with children.

"Because we want to give back to the community and make sure that children come in and leave safer than they came in” says Senior Certified Technician, Travis Roberts.

An unrestrained child is the number one killer for children in the U.S. And technicians say they are satisfied with saving children’s lives one family at a time.

This is Mr. Fitzgerald’s way of giving back to the community by helping to protect children. Fitzgerald automotive will have this free service once a month.
