County council opposes Washington Gas merger

Council members are asking the Maryland Public Service Commission to reject it

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. - Montgomery County Council members are speaking out against the acquisition of WGL Holdings, the parent company of Washington Gas.

The Maryland Public Service Commission has to either approve or decline the $6 billion offer from AltaGas.

Council members are asking the commission to reject the offer. They said that because AltaGas has lower credit ratings and is a smaller company, it would negatively affect customers.

"This merger does not serve the public interest, as the people's counsel believes and as the Maryland Public Service Commission staff believes. So, we are aligned with them in raising our hand and saying, 'This doesn't make sense to us,'" said Montgomery County Council President Roger Berliner.

The public comment period closes Friday, and the Maryland Public Service Commission will vote on Dec. 5.
