City of Gaithersburg plans new 3 acre park for residents

The city is partnering with Medimmune for planning and budgeting

GAITHERSBURG, Md. - A new city park is being planned for residents of the City of Gaithersburg. City officials are in the planning stages and provided a layout for residents to take a look at the plan. The new park is a partnership with the city of Gaithersburg and Medimmune.

"It’s going to be a passive park which adds to our inventory of our parks throughout the city - within 10 square miles we have about 30 parks," said Michele Potter, director of Parks, Recreation, & Culture with the City of Gaithersburg.

Officials say Medimmune is funding the project with a proposed budget of 1.2 million dollars.

"Once we come up with a final design we will be moving forward with construction drawings and this will go out to bid for a general contractor to do the construction," said Melanie Brown, project manager with the City of Gaithersburg.

And the park will go well with the city as Gaithersburg is a HEAL city, which stands for healthy, eating, active, living.

"We're involved in a lot of national initiatives, such as let’s move cities and towns,” said Potter.

The park will be three acres and will include bike racks, two playgrounds, and a walking trail.

"People out walking their dogs, neighbors who want to walk across the street and have a picnic lunch," said Brown.

After planners see how residents feel about the outline, they will take suggestions into consideration and modify the plan if needed.

City officials are hoping to start construction in fall of this year.  If everything goes as scheduled, the new park will be opened sometime in the summer of 2019.
