NEW MARKET, Md. - Early Thursday morning, the New Market Fire Department battled a one-alarm fire at one of Frederick County, Maryland’s favorite past times, Adventure Park USA.
“A friend of mine called me and said, 'Larry, I just went by the park and your building is on fire',” said owner of Adventure Park USA, Larry Stottlemyer.
This was a first for Stottlemyer, the owner of Adventure Park USA. In the early hours on Thursday morning, one of the theme park's buildings went up in flames.
“Knowing the owners personally and just knowing how they support the fire department is just sad to see that happened to the community,” said Captain of the New Market Fire Department, Matthew Thews.
With the smell of smoke still in the air and pieces of wood barely hanging on, fire officials said the cause of the fire was due to improperly stored staining materials.
But Larry said they count their blessings, because they had just taken some of their equipment out of that building.
“We had just taken out the bumper boats out of that building and put them in the water, all of the batteries were out there. We took one whole car from the wild cat that we had taken out,” said Stottlemyer.
But the outcome wasn't the same for some of their other equipment. Stottlemyer said, “three cars from the wild cat and three cars, a whole train from Wild West Express. The Tilt-A-Whirl. The whole Tilt-A-Whirl car and everything was inside that building.
The owner said because of the quick action by the New Market Fire Department, the pavilion next to the building was saved.
While many might think this would be a step back for Adventure Park USA, their rides are not slowing down any time soon.
“Nothing will affect this summer. We are ready to go. We do not let things like this get us down for long,” said Stottlemyer.
Fire officials said that no one was injured in the fire. They ruled the fire as accidental spontaneous combustion.
